Sustainability in Denim Wash Design (as learned from Cotton INC.’s latest Webinar)

Sustainability in Denim Finishing

  • Laser Etching not only uses less water and chemicals, but can replace 3 traditional methods —

 1) hand-sanding 2) sandblasting 3) potassium permanganate spraying (widely known as simply PP Spray)

Sandblasting & PP Spray are extremely hazardous to not only the environment, but is also a health concern for the factory worker applying these methods

NOTE: PP Spray is already a banned substance in the EU (European Union)

  • New, no stone technology

Tonello created abrasive stainless-steel drums in collaboration with Levi Strauss & Co that are removable— this allows the machines to also be used for normal washing/dyeing processes. The plates installed on the stainless steel drums can adjust the level of abrasion by the texture on the plates and the amount of time the garments are washed.

The NoStone® process reduces water consumption, production costs, emissions, waste, processing time, and manual labor.
